For starters, there are four ES trim levels available versus the three trims offered on the Acura TLX. The ES F Sport model is specifically designed with performance in mind, while the Luxury and Ultra Luxury ES trims are just that: luxurious.

ES versus TLX Model Features

  • Both have a V-6, 3.5-liter engine with 302 horsepower on the ES and 290 horsepower on the TLX.
  • There is a 24-Valve, DOHC, VVT-iW system versus SOHCi-VTEC in the TLX.
  • Cars like the ES include a Direct Shift 8-speed Automatic Transmission versus an 8-speed Dual Clutch Automatic Transmission.
  • Electronic power steering is included in the ES versus Electronic Rack & Pinion Steering. The ES has a tighter turning radius of 38.0 feet vs. 38.8 feet on the TLX.

Fuel Economy

Despite the higher horsepower, the ES still performs better economically, rated at 22/33/26 City/Highway/Combined miles per gallon. The TLX high-end trim lags at 20/31/24 City/Highway/Combined mpg.

    Safety & Security

Every ES  trim level comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, the most comprehensive suite of driver-assist features on any Lexus. The TLX offers some similar features, but not on every model.

  • Blind Spot Monitoring: Using high technology radar and video, the system alerts the driver when a vehicle at speed enters your blind spot. Both vehicles offer very similar systems. This is standard on all ES trims.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Video and radar are used to detect rear cross traffic and alert the driver. Both vehicles offer similar systems, but the ES comes with Brake Assist. The TLX does not.
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection & Brake Assist: The system detects when a collision is imminent and warns the driver.  Both vehicles have similar systems, but the ES comes with Brake Assist while the TLX doesn't.
  • Low Light Pedestrian Detection: Under low-light conditions, the system detects and alerts the driver with direction and distance data. This comes standard on every ES.
  • Day time Bicyclist Detection: The system detects cyclists and gives direction and distance.
  • Lane Tracing Assist: This technology detects the lane you are in and keeps you centered and at a safe distance from the traffic ahead. This is standard on the ES and available on some TLX models
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist: When the system detects the vehicle drifting from its lane it alerts the driver, automatically adjusts steering to correct path. This is standard on the ES and offered on the TLX without Steering Assist.
  • All Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: The system uses radar and video to maintain distance and speed from the vehicle in front. Both vehicles offer similar systems
  • Adaptive Front Lighting System: The system uses speed and steering sensors to detect a turn and directionally adjusts low-beam lamps providing better vision.
